Warpower: Taiwan

The Warpower series of sites take a unique, 'by-the-numbers', quick-reference approach to the current (2023) military capabilities of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Taiwan sits in the shadow of its neighbor, China, and stands as its direct democratic counterpart. Limited by its overseer, the island nation looks to a growing indigenous industrial base as well as low-profile dealings with a dwindling collection of global supporters. It greatest supporter, however, remains the United States. The systems showcased throughout this site represent the very tools that would be brought to bear should the nation look to defend itself from invasion.

Taiwanese air power is led by the lightweight American F-16 Fighting Falcon multirole type and this is backed by over 100 of the locally-developed F-CK-1 fighter type (upgraded to a C-model guise). The service still operates aging F-5 Tiger II fighters as well as French M2000 delta-winged fighter-bombers in the M2000-5EI mark. A modest collection of special-mission types are kept on hand and the transport force is equally limited to the tactical level. The rotorcraft force is limited to French and American offerings. The trainer force is notably large and includes solutions for basic, advanced, and combat training.
NOTES: As many as 66 total F-16V multi-role fighters are on order.

Modern Taiwanese land power is dominated by aging American types with roots set in the early and late Cold War period. This includes both the M48 and M60 Patton tanks of which the latter is the only one classified as a true Main Battle Tank. The CM-11 and CM-12 are further evolutions of the American M48 Medium Tank. The M1A2 Abrams is set to make its appearance in number though only two have been delivered in 2022. The rest of the inventory is largely of Taiwanese or American in origin and a mix of old and modern designs. In total number, the inventory is dwarfed by what is available to the Peoples Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) of China.
NOTES: A total of 108 M1A2T Abrams MBTs are on order.

The modern Republic of China Navy fleet is sorely lacking in many areas. The categories that are filled are typically filled with aging hulls purchased from foreign powers such as the United States and France. The service does not field any aircraft carrier or helicopter carrier force and lacks any nuclear-powered / nuclear-attack submarines found in great numbers throughout the rival Peoples Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of China. Just four attack submarines are kept on hand and these are former World War 2-era GUPPY II-upgraded American Navy and former Dutch attack types. The surface fleet is led by a collection of four destroyers though, again, these are former USN Kidd-class vessels. The frigate force of 22 hulls might appear imposing on paper but, again, this is a force of refurbished foreign types made up of the USN Knox-class and Oliver Hazard Perry-class as well as the French La Fayette-class. Smaller hulls are now being constructed through local industry as needed.
